On February 5th, I get to read poetry with some of my favorite people at this really great venue, Manazar Gamboa Theater in Long Beach, hosted by Felicia Cade. The P.O.W. (Power of Words) Open Mic will have my two favorite things: poetry and music. I’m planning on a special set of poems for the month of love. Flourish
The possibility of birth since our death
has passed, yet— in nine months
a new life is here now, where you abandoned us.
This Thursday girl, my child, my only daughter,
has become the woman you will never know, like
you once knew
the most unlit folds of me.
I birthed her from my own black ashes and none
of the fragile skin of you. She lives in my night side,
grows in those thick shards, those tire weight pocks.
She flourishes in the white vacuum space you
sucked out from me
like a plane window under pressure cracked,
spidering—
instantly gone.
She loves the deafened stillness and
grows in my gnawing hunger, grows out
through my fingernails and the follicles
of my new hair-the softness of which
you will never know—
like you once knew the lather and rinse of it.

Speakeasy: Storytelling Showcase @ MADE IN LB
I’m very excited about this new store that just opened called MADE in LB. It features local products from small merchants and artisans in Long Beach. They are also going to have in-store events! Gatsby Books, our favorite indie bookstore, will have a booth there early next year when they officially open. In the meantime, they will have a holiday showcase of local merchants and Gatsby’s monthly storytelling showcase, Speakeasy, will be held there on Wednesday, December 17th at 7 pm. On top of all that, I get to do a special storytelling set of poetry specially arranged for the event. If you are in the area, come down and check out the local goodness and hear a story or two or three. There is even an open list if you have a story to tell! 236 Pine Ave, Long Beach.
Lucid Moose Lit on ArtistFirst Radio
My poetry partner, Nancy Lynée Woo, was interviewed recently by Maxine Thompson on Artists First. She talks about the press we co-founded, Lucid Moose Lit, and the anthology Gutters & Alleyways (also being featured at the reading I co-host next Monday at Gatsby Books). She explains how we collaborated on the project and our mutual experiences on poverty. She also does a beautiful job reading a poem I wrote for the anthology, “Why I Can’t Kill Daddy Long Legs Hiding in My Shower Curtain”. Tuesday, November 18th, Nancy Lynée Woo and I will be bringing some poetry magic to Rebel Bite Pizza hosted by Vaughan Risher. This groovy open mic has a mix of music and poetry while you eat some seriously good pizza. Starting at 7 pm, you can sign up to share your poetry or songs and hang out with us for a while. 649 E. Louder Than Long Beach On November 15, 2014
Louder Than Long Beach is back and we get to join the fun! Saturday, November 15th, from 2-10 p.m., come to the Bungalow Building at 729 N. Pine Ave and spend the day full of music, art, and poetry. Come to The dA Center for the Arts for The San Gabriel Valley Literary Festival‘s monthly reading and open mic. I am featuring with Alexis Fancher, the author of How I Lost My Virginity To Michael Cohen and Other Heart Stab Poems.

Saturday Afternoon Poetry in Pasadena
Sarah Thursday and Nancy Lynée Woo are at it again! We have been very busy bees launching a new press, Lucid Moose Lit, and feel it’s time to get back to how we first became poetry partners, by reading you a full set of our own poems. Join us in Pasadena in the back room at the Santa Catalina Branch Library with host, Don Kingfisher Campbell, and fellow poet, Marvin Dorsey. There will be a open reading list if you also have poems to share.
